BORI CE: 03-138-014

पुत्रशोकमनुप्राप्य एष रैभ्यस्य कर्मणा
त्यक्ष्यामि त्वामृते पुत्र प्राणानिष्टतमान्भुवि

"The grief of my son's death afflicts me. This is because of Raibhya's acts. O son! Now that you are dead and I have lost you, I too will give up my life, the most precious thing on earth."

विलप्यैवं बहुविधं भरद्वाजोऽदहत्सुतम्
सुसमिद्धं ततः पश्चात्प्रविवेश हुताशनम्

"Having thus lamented in many different ways, Bharadwaja cremated his son. Then he too entered a blazing fire."

Very interesting to find this; there are multiple injunctions in Hinduism against suicide.

Come to think of it, it makes sense for societies (premodern and modern alike) to condemn suicidal tendencies -

An individual is hardly their own, they are state property. The state/society would not want working age people (mostly men) ending their lives while the state still thinks it can extract some utility from that individual. Society at large is quite dependent on the group of people who either find joy in their work or show up everyday despite their work being joyless. Pre-modern slaves, peasants, soldiers, or even modern factory-workers, IT service-sector employees, etc come to work every day and contribute funds directly or indirectly to state's development plans. The state sees utmost benefit in discouraging these people from taking the ultimate step. Hence the anti-suicide psyop.

("Honorable" suicide is of course excluded from the above analysis)
